About Mrs. GREEN APPLE

Last updated:

Mrs. GREEN APPLE are a Japanese pop-rock band formed in Tokyo in 2013 by vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter Motoki Ohmori, then a teenager. The group currently comprise Ohmori, guitarist Hiloto Wakai, and keyboardist Ryoka Fujisawa. Making their major-label debut through EMI Records with the mini-album ‘Variety’ in 2015, the original five-piece developed a distinctive sound that brought together guitar-driven alternative rock, power-pop melodies, intricate keyboard arrangements, and Ohmori’s wide-ranging vocals. Their music has since expanded to incorporate orchestral arrangements, funk, electronic production, and dance-pop, often contrasting upbeat melodies with lyrics exploring personal struggles, relationships, and self-acceptance.

Their early albums, including ‘TWELVE’ (2016), ‘ENSEMBLE’ (2018), and ‘Attitude’ (2019), steadily established Mrs. GREEN APPLE within Japan’s mainstream rock scene. Songs such as ‘Ao to Natsu’, ‘Boku no Koto’, and ‘Inferno’, the latter serving as an opening theme for the anime Fire Force, helped broaden their audience. The band made their first overseas festival appearance in Taiwan in 2019, followed by their first international headline concert later that year. Their growing popularity at home culminated in the sold-out EDEN no SONO arena tour, which attracted approximately 80,000 attendees across seven performances between December 2019 and February 2020.

On 8th July 2020, Mrs. GREEN APPLE released their first greatest-hits album, ‘5’, and announced the conclusion of Phase 1, entering a hiatus that lasted approximately 20 months. Drummer Ayaka Yamanaka and bassist Kiyokazu Takano departed in December 2021, leaving Ohmori, Wakai, and Fujisawa to relaunch the band as a trio in March 2022. Their second phase introduced a more colourful visual identity and an increasingly expansive pop sound, beginning with the mini-album ‘Unity’ and its breakout single ‘Dance Hall’. The 2023 album ‘ANTENNA’ consolidated their commercial resurgence, while songs including ‘Que Sera Sera’, ‘Lilac’, and ‘Darling’ helped establish the trio as one of Japan’s most successful contemporary acts.

Mrs. GREEN APPLE achieved an unprecedented milestone for a band by winning the grand prize at the Japan Record Awards for three consecutive years, with ‘Que Sera Sera’ in 2023, ‘Lilac’ in 2024, and ‘Darling’ in 2025. Their music has also become closely associated with Japanese film, television, and anime, including ‘Soranji’ for the film From Siberia with Love, ‘Lilac’ for Oblivion Battery, and ‘KUSUSHIKI’ for the second season of The Apothecary Diaries. Their rise was not without controversy, however, as the music video for their 2024 single ‘Columbus’ was withdrawn following criticism of its treatment of colonial history, prompting an apology from the band’s label and management.

Their 2025 major-debut anniversary celebrations, branded MGA MAGICAL 10 YEARS, included the greatest-hits album ’10’, large-scale concerts, exhibitions, and their first headline performances in South Korea. The compilation became their first million-selling release in Japan and reached No. 10 on the IFPI Global Album Chart for 2025, while the band placed 13th in the organisation’s Global Artist Chart. They were also named Artist of the Year at the inaugural MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN in 2025 and retained the award in 2026, recognition of their sustained commercial and cultural influence.

After concluding Phase 2 at the end of 2025, Mrs. GREEN APPLE entered Phase 3 in January 2026 with ‘lulu.’, the opening theme for the second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, which set a new first-day streaming record for a Japanese artist on Oricon. Their sixth original studio album, ‘POPS’, followed in September 2026, their first full-length studio release in more than three years, and topped Billboard Japan’s album rankings across physical sales, downloads, and streaming. Their live ambitions expanded further with the six-date ZENJIN MITO TO IM/MUTABLE ~Interlude Edition~ stadium tour, which attracted approximately 390,000 in-person attendees and reached around 570,000 people when broadcasts and live viewings were included. Four of those performances took place at Japan National Stadium, making Mrs. GREEN APPLE the first act to perform at the rebuilt venue four times within a single tour. Combining mainstream pop success with technically ambitious songwriting and large-scale live production, the trio remain a defining presence in contemporary Japanese music.
