Maximum the Hormone’s abrasive Chainsaw Man hit is back for the series’ big screen premiere later this month. The band’s track ‘HAWATARI NIOKU CENTI [2-hundred-million-centimeter-long blades]’ returns as an insert song in Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, this time as ‘HAWATARI NIOKU CENTI [2-hundred-million-centimeter-long blades] (70% Unlocked edit)’. The film opens in Japan on September 19th.
The song first appeared as the ending for episode 3 of the 2022 TV anime, but only the 90-second TV cut was ever released. Now the new “70% Unlocked” version finally reveals what comes after the broadcast edit.
In an official comment, vocalist and guitarist Maximum the Ryo-kun explained why the full version had been held back:
“One reason we’d only ever released the 90-second TV cut was… well, because the second verse actually sings about Reze. And now—can you believe it? That very song ended up in the actual Reze Arc movie…! That makes it two wins in a row for my dream collab battles! LOL”
Formed in Hachioji in 1998, Maximum the Hormone are Maximum the Ryo-kun (guitar, vocals), Daisuke-han (vocals), Nao (drums, vocals), and Ue-chan (bass). Their heavy, quick-shifting songwriting and offbeat humour made them a natural fit for anime, breaking out internationally in 2007 with the opening and ending themes to Death Note. A year later they released the single ‘F’, written about Dragon Ball villain Frieza. The track later featured in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ (2015), after Akira Toriyama credited the song as the inspiration for the film’s title and concept.
