Ado has revealed the cover artwork for her new single ‘Vivarium’, out digitally on February 18th. For the first time in her career, the cover features a photograph of the 23-year-old artist herself rather than an illustrated visual.
Shot by film director and photographer Kyotaro Hayashi, the artwork shows Ado from behind, backlit by a computer screen inside a dark closet. The space directly references her early recording days, when she sang inside her bedroom closet prior to her major debut.
Since her breakout at 17 with 2020’s ‘Usseewa’, Ado has maintained strict control over her appearance. Despite performing large-scale arena and stadium shows across the globe, including a concert at London’s O2 Arena and an upcoming date at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, she appears onstage in silhouette, preventing audiences from seeing any identifiable features.
Following the artwork’s release, some users online have used AI and photo-editing software to brighten the image in an attempt to reveal additional detail.
‘Vivarium’ is written and composed by Ado, with arrangement by Takafumi “CO-K” Kokei, bandmaster for her live performances. The track transforms Ado’s internal struggle with self-denial and her search for light into a vocal rock arrangement. She developed it alongside the autobiographical non-fiction book Vivarium: Ado and Me, set for publication on February 26th.

The book, written by bestselling author Narumi Komatsu, is based on Ado’s own account of her life and the result of three years of interviews. Across 336 pages, it traces her childhood, her time out of school, her emergence as an utaite, and her meeting with Cloud Nine CEO Takuya Chigira, through to her rise from posting songs online to embarking on a world tour. Publisher KADOKAWA has not confirmed an English-language edition of the book at the time of writing.
