ATARASHII GAKKO! drop fourth album ‘From Tokyo with Love’ following 11th anniversary celebration in London

ATARASHII GAKKO! have released their fourth full-length album, ‘From Tokyo with Love’, via 88rising, alongside the premiere of their new music video for the album’s opener ‘Oi AG!’. The release follows the group’s 11th anniversary performance at London’s Roundhouse on July 19th, their first anniversary celebration overseas.

‘From Tokyo with Love’ collects 10 tracks spanning J-pop funk, synth-pop, and rock ballads. Solo features for KANON, MIZYU, and RIN sit alongside the group numbers led by frontwoman SUZUKA, for a record that showcases both the four-piece’s unity and each member’s individual styles. The “Love” of the title stands for ‘magokoro’, or sincerity from the heart, and the group frame the album as a return to Tokyo, their starting point and hometown.

“Following ‘AG! Calling’ and our 10th anniversary, we are carrying with us all the energy we have felt around the world as we prepare to soar towards an even BIGGER STAGE!

Our new album, ‘From Tokyo with Love’, is sent with all our heart from Tokyo, our starting point and our hometown.

As we question who we are, fire ourselves up, and continue evolving, we have packed these 10 songs with both the unity of our four distinct flavours and the individuality of each member.

With this album, we will keep accelerating towards new challenges, growth, and encounters all across the planet!”

Set to a track steeped in 1980s rock, the ‘Oi AG!’ video follows the group as they remodel a kei truck into a DIY stage on wheels, a symbol of homegrown revolution, and race it through a manga-style warp space to descend on Tokyo. On the video’s concept, director Mackenzie Sheppard commented:

“The moment I first heard ‘Oi AG!’, I was struck by the feeling that ZZ Top, AC/DC, and ATARASHII GAKKO! had left behind a top-secret collaboration recording that had just been unearthed from an archive. More than anything, I wanted to translate directly into visuals the sensation of racing forward on pure AG! energy, and that was where this concept began to take shape. I hope you enjoy it.”

The Roundhouse show closed a three-date European tour that took AG to Colours of Ostrava in the Czech Republic on July 16th, Lollapalooza Berlin in Germany on July 18th, and London on July 19th. The London date marked the first time the group have staged an anniversary concert outside Japan, with fans travelling in from across the world.

Two of the album tracks have also been picked up for tie-ups. ‘Take Me With You’ has been chosen as the campaign song for the Shibuya City Tourism Association’s GO GLOBAL project, while ‘TTTTOKYO’ features in a new Sumitomo Mitsui Card commercial for its Credit Card Transit service.

ATARASHII GAKKO! will embark on their first Latin American tour in December, visiting Santiago, São Paulo, and Mexico City. The three-date tour will culminate at the Velódromo Olímpico with what promoter OCESA describes as the largest headline concert of their career to date.
