TOKYO DEN-NOU interview: The anime high-school DJ club from a future Tokyo

In DEN-ON-BU's future Tokyo, electronic music runs the culture and high-school DJ clubs fight to be number one. Ahead of the first UK show, producer and performer Ichigo Rinahamu explains why anime fans and club-goers can both find something in TOKYO DEN-NOU.

TOKYO DEN-NOU (東京電脳) are a DJ-vocal group whose members voice anime characters, and whose music, story, and live shows all share one world. They represent the Neo Tokyo area of DEN-ON-BU, Bandai Namco Entertainment’s character project built around dance music, whose fiction imagines a near future where electronic music sits at the centre of culture, DJs are the superstars, and high-school clubs compete to be the best.

Launched in October 2023 and produced by idol, DJ, and producer Ichigo Rinahamu through her 15STYLE label, the unit has spent nearly three years piecing together a near-future Tokyo out of club culture, anime, fashion, and the internet.

Their first chapter closed in early 2026 with debut album ‘TOKYO DEN-NOU:LAYER I’, drawing on a producer roster including KOTONOHOUSE, TeddyLoid, KSUKE, and Hylen. A second chapter followed, bringing new character Yumeno Mia into the story.

On 1st August 2026, TOKYO DEN-NOU make their UK debut at SYNC, the first DEN-ON-BU event ever held in the country, at Fire Club in Vauxhall, London. Neneruneru (CV: Ichigo Rinahamu) and Yanami Rain (CV: yAmmy) are joined by Ulu Inukai (CV: POCHI) from sister unit Nakano Den-nou, alongside UK and international acts including Wolf Cutt and Leslie Wai. All three performers are former members of CY8ER, the idol group Rinahamu produced until it disbanded in 2021. The following day they appear at Idol Con at the Royal National Hotel for a meet-and-greet.

Ahead of their first UK appearances, we spoke to Rinahamu about the world of TOKYO DEN-NOU, the “future Tokyo” she set out to represent, and what it would really mean for Tokyo to sync with the world.

TOKYO DEN-NOU launched in October 2023 through DEN-ON-BU’s Neo Tokyo area, with 15STYLE producing the unit. What was the first idea or conversation that made you feel this project could become something different from a standard idol or DJ act?

It started with the desire to create a project that could express the internet and Tokyo’s street culture as a single world view. The very first idea was to build a project where music, stories, and characters are all connected, rather than just having live performances.

DEN-ON-BU imagines a future where electronic music drives youth culture and school DJ clubs compete for the top spot. Within that setting, what kind of “Tokyo” did you want TOKYO DEN-NOU to represent?

The “Tokyo” I wanted to express is a “future Tokyo” where cultures from all over the world gather and are constantly updated. It’s a place where club culture, anime, fashion, and the internet all blend together, giving birth to new culture every day. I want TOKYO DEN-NOU to express that energy.

Rinahamu, TOKYO DEN-NOU puts you in two very different positions: producer of the project and performer as Neneruneru. When you’re making creative decisions, do you think first as Rinahamu the producer, or as Neneruneru inside the story?

When it comes to production, world-building, and music, I often think as a producer. However, when writing stories or lyrics, I often immerse myself in the feelings of each character, thinking, “How would NeneruNeru or the other characters feel?”.

Your work with BPM15Q and CY8ER helped connect idol performance with club music. What did those projects teach you that you wanted to take further with TOKYO DEN-NOU?

With TOKYO DEN-NOU, we’ve taken it a step further, aiming for a project that is naturally accepted even within authentic DJ culture and dance music scenes. I want us to become an act that can exist seamlessly not only in live music venues but also in clubs and overseas festivals.

Music video for ‘DIVE’, TOKYO DEN-NOU’s debut single, produced by TeddyLoid.

TOKYO DEN-NOU’s music has featured producers including KOTONOHOUSE, TeddyLoid, KSUKE, Hylen, and Moe Shop. When a producer brings their own strong sound to the project, what makes a track feel unmistakably like TOKYO DEN-NOU?

What they’ve got in common is a world view that lets you feel a “near-future Tokyo” and the fact that the characters’ stories are within the music. Every time, we produce with the perspective of, “Is this track really a sound that rings out in the world of TOKYO DEN-NOU?”. I think every track sounds like TOKYO DEN-NOU because that world view is consistent.

You perform as fictional high-school characters yet appear in person to DJ and sing live. What is the hardest part of keeping the live mix and vocals in sync with the on-screen characters?

The most difficult part is the balance between portraying the character and my own live performance. During shows, I’m conscious of appearing as the character at every single moment.

Your first album, TOKYO DEN-NOU:LAYER I, closed the group’s first chapter. When you listen back to that album now, what do you think it captured about the original version of TOKYO DEN-NOU?

I believe LAYER I is the “record of the beginning” for TOKYO DEN-NOU. You might find new discoveries if you listen to it alongside the monologue album, LOST TOKYO -Hourglass of Light-.

TOKYO DEN-NOU entered its second chapter in 2026. Can you tell us what has changed in this new chapter?

In the first chapter, Hikari Kano took a break, and in the second chapter, Mia Yumeno joined. I think you’ll be able to enjoy a new atmosphere that’s different from the first chapter because Mia has joined.

POCHI, you’re joining the UK show as Ulu Inukai from Nakano Den-nou. What does Ulu bring that POCHI wouldn’t?

POCHI: By performing on stage as the character, I believe the audience can also immerse themselves in the world of the story. Furthermore, Ulu brings a cheerful and happy atmosphere, making the show even more fun!

SYNC at Fire Club is the first DEN-ON-BU event in the UK. What kind of night are you hoping to create with the UK acts on the bill, including Wolf Cutt and Leslie Wai?

I don’t want it to be an event where we just unilaterally show Japanese culture; I hope it becomes a night where our cultures mix together. There’s a wonderful club culture in the UK, and we want to be stimulated by it too. I’m looking forward to creating a new vibe together!

The day after SYNC, you appear at Idol Con. What are you most looking forward to about meeting overseas fans face to face?

We can connect with people all over the world on social media, but opportunities to meet in person are very special. What I’m looking forward to most is seeing with my own eyes what kind of reactions they have and which songs they’ve come to love.

‘dialing+darling’, TOKYO DEN-NOU’s 2026 collaboration single with producer Moe Shop.

TOKYO DEN-NOU sits between idol culture, club music, anime-style character work, and virtual performance. From your perspective, what does this format allow you to do that a more traditional idol group couldn’t?

It’s the ability to cultivate characters, music, live shows, and stories all at the same time. You can enjoy it as a singular work of art, or you can enjoy it as a DJ event. I think the strength of TOKYO DEN-NOU is that people who love anime and people who love club music can both enter from different gateways.

Your tagline is “Tokyo Syncs the World”. After these first UK dates, what would it mean for TOKYO DEN-NOU to truly become a global project?

“Performing overseas” is not our ultimate goal. What we truly aim for is to connect (Sync) through the TOKYO DEN-NOU project with creators and fans all over the world. I believe this UK performance is the first step toward that.
