Gyaru model and TV personality Yukipoyo has released her first single ‘Te-Te Gyaru’, a Brazilian funk ode to gyaru culture, along with an accompanying music video.
‘Te-Te Gyaru’ wears its love for the subculture on its sleeve, with lyrics that every gyaru can relate to in some way. It includes nods to hallmarks of the culture like hanging out at Shibuya’s famous 109 department store, wearing eye-enlarging contact lenses, and taking purikura.
It’s also a hype track for those within the subculture, with the post-hook chanting “Gyaru, gyaru, gyaru, gyaru, gyaru! So iconic, total genius gyaru”. The lyrics also focus on community within gyaru culture, “Gyarus are the ones who bring world peace. Aim high! Love deep! Friendship for all! Cheers!”. The title’s “Te-Te” derives from “teetee” (てぇてぇ), a slang term meaning “precious”.

The song was written by Yukipoyo and Japan based artist and producer XLII, with Yukipoyo handling the lyrics, and XLII producing the music. XLII has previously worked with artists such as MINMI, Yayoi Daimon, Watson, AKKOGORILLA, and Reichi. He’s also worked with multiple international brands including G-SHOCK, Toyota, and Red Bull, as well as creating music for anime, film, and theatre.
Additionally, the song has received a music video, directed by Urara Ogasawara and produced by PUSH Japan, the creative agency behind the video for Megan Thee Stallion x Yuki Chiba’s ‘Mamushi’, winner of Best Trending Video at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. It’s a flashy and fun romp around Shibuya, putting the viewer in the epicenter of gyaru culture. We see Yukipoyo and friends, including egg and nuts magazine models like Ran, Utena, and HINA, driving and dancing around Shibuya, taking purikura, chilling at cafe and concept store 030 Shibuya, and hanging around 109.
Reportedly, a Tagalog remix is also in the works. Yukipoyo is working with Filipino rapper Zae on ‘Te-Te Gyaru (feat. Zae) [Tagalog ver.]’, which has yet to receive a release date. Zae is a rapidly rising star in hip-hop in her home country, racking up more than 590,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with a nomination for Hip-Hop Song of the Year at the inaugural Filipino Music Awards 2025 for her collaboration with Hev Abi on ‘SUBOMOTO REMIX’.
