LUNA CHEE grow to 105 members for McDonald’s Japan’s ‘ROSIER’ sequel

LUNA CHEE, the LUNA SEA-approved copy band McDonald’s Japan formed last summer, return with 105 musicians for Minna de LUNA CHEE (“LUNA CHEE all together”), a new ad airing across Japan from November 3rd. Actor Seishiro Kato returns as frontman, surrounded by visual kei musicians recreating LUNA SEA’s ‘ROSIER’ music video.

The campaign promotes McDonald’s returning Chee Chee range of extra-cheesy burgers, available in Japan from November 4th to 24th. McDonald’s own press copy counts 100 artists from 19 bands, LUNA CHEE included, but the published credit list names 105 musicians. That works out at 21 vocalists, 42 guitarists, 21 bassists, and 21 drummers, enough for 21 complete LUNA SEA line-ups.

Last summer’s original core members return in full, with HARUTO (LUNA RIVER) and HIROTO (Alice Nine.) on guitar, Yue (KIZU) on bass, and Hibiki (Matenrou Opera) back behind the kit.

Impersonator tam tam, who provided the vocals for last year’s parody, also fronts a unit of his own. RYUICHI made a surprise visit to last year’s recording session to coach him personally, and is credited as vocal supervisor on both versions.

vistlip, NICOLAS, Z CLEAR, Misui, Zeke Deux, and DuelJewel all took part as complete line-ups, while the other units mix members from different bands. The most stacked is the one NIGHTMARE and Kenjiro Murai both call a “special band”, with YOMI (NIGHTMARE) on vocals, Reo (lynch.) and DEZERT’s Miyako on guitar, Murai (cali≠gari) on bass, and SORA (DEZERT) on drums.

LUNA SEA bassist J made a surprise visit to the shoot, arriving unannounced as the musicians gathered at their instruments. “I came here to represent the band”, he told them. “You are all LUNA SEA!”. Kato said he never imagined it could happen, and La luna Mare bassist Chihiro, who played one of the J roles, said J went round the room shaking hands.

One set-up put 20 RYUICHIs on screen at once, Kato included. “Wow! I can’t tell where I am”, he said while checking the monitor. Leading the group through RYUICHI’s moves, tam tam told them to “move your hands like petals, as if they’re stuck to your forehead”, which Kato called “a special skill I’ll never use anywhere else”.

What began as an elaborate burger commercial also carried a more personal meaning for some of the musicians. Several dedicated their part to LUNA SEA drummer Shinya, who died on February 17th aged 56.

For lynch. guitarist Reo, appearing in his first-ever commercial was a chance to honour Shinya’s wish that LUNA SEA never stop. “From the moment the sound started, every one of us was LUNA SEA”, he wrote.

J picked up the same idea when he shared McDonald’s group photo, tagging the post with Shinya’s name. “‘Don’t stop LUNA SEA’. I can feel that burning passion from all of you”, he wrote. “Thank you so much”.

For many in the room, ‘ROSIER’ reaches back to childhood. Former [Alexandros] drummer Satoyasu Shomura, who plays in tam tam’s unit, said he fell for LUNA SEA, and for drumming, after seeing ‘DESIRE’ on Music Station in primary school. SORA said he absorbed ‘ROSIER’ without trying at five years old, when his mother played LUNA SEA in the car almost every day.

Yue said the best part was that none of it was CG or AI. “This many band members were actually there, all aiming for the same thing”, he wrote. MAMA. guitarist JiMYY recalled being too nervous to say a word to INORAN when they crossed paths at PARTY ZOO last year, and this time he played “INORAN number 13 or so”.

McDonald’s also shared a behind-the-scenes video that includes interviews with Kato, tam tam, J, and members of the original line-up. tam tam’s caption calls him both an impersonator and a SLAVE, the name LUNA SEA fans go by, and the video ends with the whole cast in a huddle as their signatures fill the screen.

Murai saw the funny side, saying he has got through most of life’s hard times on Big Macs. Ex-Fatima bassist Lay, who runs his own burger shop, signed up because a burger shop owner appearing in a McDonald’s ad seemed too funny to pass up.

The full version, titled ‘Chee Chee ROSIER’, passed 4.8 million views on X within 14 hours of going up on November 2nd, and the 30-second TV cut airs nationwide from November 3rd.
