DIR EN GREY returned to the UK, taking over London’s KOKO for the Paradox of Retaliation tour, celebrating the release of their new album, Dum Spiro Spero.

As the doors swung open, fans flocked to secure their ideal spots within the venue, with the most coveted position being right in front of the stage, beneath Kyo. The band emerged to thunderous applause, diving straight from their intro, Kyoukotsu No Nari, into an electrifying performance of Hageshisa To…, igniting the crowd with raised fists and devil horns, accompanied by a sea of enthusiastic shuffling.

DIR EN GREY live in London: Paradox of Retaliation tour hits the UK

In contrast to their 2010 show, not much had changed. Despite introducing some new tracks, the setlist featured many familiar songs. While classics like Rotting Root and Agitated Screams of Maggots made appearances, and newer additions like Lotus and Different Sense added a fresh dimension, the reliance on the same songs left some fans wanting. Older enthusiasts, in particular, may have felt a bit excluded, missing the inclusion of tracks from albums like Vulgar and Macabre.

The decision to perform updated versions of songs like -Zan- and Obscure, now featuring Kyo’s growls instead of singing, might have disappointed some. Nevertheless, as a unit, DIR EN GREY delivered a flawless and captivating performance. Having entertained diverse crowds over the years, they knew how to ignite the audience. Despite a somewhat repetitive setlist, they succeeded in providing an entertaining show once again.

-Zan- marked the conclusion of their set before they briefly vanished from the stage. The thunderous cheers and screams of the crowd summoned them back for an encore, concluding with Rasetsukoku, followed by a departure accompanied by an instrumental rendition of Vanitas.

The energy at the event was palpable, with a mix of longtime fans and newcomers alike, all eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite artists. Despite the familiarity of the performance, most attendees left the venue exhilarated after a high-energy, albeit familiar, Diru showcase.

The concert, on the whole, was commendable; a solid setlist, an outstanding performance, and an ecstatic crowd. However, for those who witnessed the band’s show a year prior, this performance might not have stood out as much.
