HARU NEMURI releases new demo urging Japanese voters to turn out in snap election

HARU NEMURI has shared a new demo, ‘もううんざりだよ†’ (‘I’m So Sick of It†’), as a direct response to Japan’s current political climate and a call for people to engage with the upcoming snap election.

In posts accompanying the release, the singer-songwriter, poetry rapper and producer said she wrote the song after seeing claims that “fascist politicians are planning to rush into an election without completing their terms, gloss over issues such as slush funds and ties to the Unification Church, and aim for an even more authoritarian style of governance”.

Opening with a quotation from British historian and Liberal politician Lord Acton, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”, the track lays out HARU NEMURI’s frustration with contemporary Japanese politics. Its lyrics reference minimum wage, rising costs, and political apathy, while criticising a legal framework that favours corporations.

She also condemns rhetoric around “painful reforms”, the “Japanese first” movement, and what she describes as systems that classify people by attributes. The line “Give back that Buzzword of the Year” points to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s “work, work, work, work, and work” remark, which was awarded Japan’s Buzzword of the Year.

The song also references words by the late rapper ECD, drawing from his 2014 statement: “Why do you want to believe you’re powerless? There is power. Each person has their own share”. That sentiment feeds into the song’s closing call to action, which urges listeners not to forget the “privilege” voting represents.

Expanding on her position online, HARU NEMURI wrote that while she is “fundamentally opposed to party-based politics” and seeks systems that are “more directly democratic rather than representative democracy”, she believes that “within the system that exists here and now, what we can do is vote”. She also warned against disengagement, adding:

“Don’t think it has nothing to do with you. Don’t be deceived by disinformation, discriminatory sentiments, or superficial words. No one can escape social structures and remain uninvolved.”

Alongside the demo, HARU NEMURI has released stems and instrumental versions of the track via a link shared on social media and in the song’s YouTube description, inviting remixes and beat jacking, while asking that the materials not be used to spread disinformation or discrimination.

The release arrives just ahead of Japan’s House of Representatives election, which follows Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s decision to dissolve the lower house just months after taking office, triggering one of the shortest campaign periods in Japan’s post-war history. Campaigning is set to begin on January 27th, with voting scheduled for February 8th.
