XG have redefined the meaning of their group name, moving from Xtraordinary Girls to Xtraordinary Genes. The group shared the update on January 12th, Japan’s Coming-of-Age Day, with all members now in their 20s following Cocona’s birthday in December.
In a statement published on their official website, XG and their agency XGALX explained that “Genes” represents the power and creativity at the group’s core. The term also reflects a commitment to creating new culture without restriction from convention. While the group name itself remains XG, its meaning has now been redefined.
The statement said “Girls” was XG’s starting point, with “Genes” described as a return to the centre of the group’s identity. XGALX said the change reflects a deeper and more essential step forward, while keeping XG’s focus on empowering people from a wide range of backgrounds around the world.

Although the statement does not cite a specific reason for the change, the announcement follows member Cocona publicly coming out as transmasculine non-binary on December 6th, their 20th birthday. At the time, the group’s producer JAKOPS (SIMON) stressed that respecting the members as people remains central to XG and XGALX.
XG will release their first full-length album, ‘THE CORE – 核’, on January 23rd.
