YOASOBI producer and songwriter Ayase and ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION frontman Masafumi Gotoh found common ground this week through a shared dislike of their label’s choice of toilet paper.
Ayase set off what would become a viral exchange after posting a complaint about the toilet paper at Sony Music Japan’s head office. On Tuesday February 17th, Ayase wrote that the toilet paper was painfully rough, in a post that quickly passed 4.2 million views.
“The toilet paper at Sony Music’s headquarters is so hard it tore my anus to shreds.”

Gotoh quote-replied a few hours later, comparing the paper to sandpaper and calling for an upgrade to double-ply. His reply has since drawn 1.3 million views.
“The toilet paper at Sony Music is the hard, thin single-ply kind that’s like sandpaper. I want them to switch to double-ply.”

Neither artist added further comment, but the exchange quickly spread among Japanese music fans online. Many pointed out the surreal image of two major Sony-affiliated artists publicly critiquing their own label’s office supplies, while others joked about the company’s engineering standards stopping short of the washroom.
Ayase is best known as the composer and producer of YOASOBI alongside vocalist Ikura. Gotoh has fronted ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION since the band formed in Yokohama in 1996, with the group releasing their major-label work through Ki/oon Music, a Sony Music Japan imprint, since 2002.
