About Otoboke Beaver

Last updated:

Otoboke Beaver (おとぼけビ~バ~) are a four-piece punk band from Kyoto, Japan, formed in 2009. The group grew out of the university music society Rock Commune, where its members first played covers before deciding to write their own material. Their name comes from a love hotel in eastern Osaka. Led by vocalist and guitarist Accorinrin, Otoboke Beaver combine frantic garage-punk riffs, abrupt tempo changes, tight ensemble playing and shouted group vocals with cutting lyrics in Japanese, often using Kyoto and wider Kansai dialect.

Humour is central to the band’s confrontational style. Their short, unpredictable songs take aim at awkward relationships, unwanted attention, gender expectations and the frustrations of everyday life, often drawing on the timing and wordplay of Kansai comedy. The members have cited Japanese artists including Yapoos, Hikashu and Afrirampo among their influences, while their music has also drawn comparisons with riot grrrl and noise-rock.

Their international breakthrough began with Damnably’s 2016 compilation ‘Okoshiyasu!! Otoboke Beaver’ and their first UK tour that May. A run of acclaimed shows followed, including SXSW and Fuji Rock in 2017 and Coachella in 2018. The band released ‘Itekoma Hits’ in 2019 and ‘Super Champon’ in 2022, records that brought their breathless songwriting and sharp wit to a wider audience. Their rise has continued through international tours and festival appearances, including Glastonbury’s Park Stage in 2024 and Lollapalooza in 2025. In 2026 they supported Foo Fighters at six European and UK stadium dates, including Liverpool’s Anfield, alongside a headline show at London’s Electric Ballroom.

After releasing the live albums ‘Live at TakuTaku’ and ‘Live at Fandango’ in 2025, Otoboke Beaver returned with the three-track maxi single ‘Is The New Album Out Yet?’ in April 2026. It marked the final studio recordings featuring drummer Kahokiss, who had joined in 2018 and retired from the group in 2026 following a farewell run of concerts. She was succeeded by Leo (Emi Morimoto), a founding member of Ni Hao! and former Shonen Knife drummer.

As of November 2026, Otoboke Beaver’s line-up is Accorinrin (vocals and guitar), Yoyoyoshie (guitar and vocals), Hirochan (bass and vocals) and Leo (drums and vocals). Former members include bassist Nishikawachi and drummers Pop and Kahokiss.
